The film begins with Deepak (Sanjay Kapoor), a kind-hearted young man who works as a driver in Delhi, finding a purse that belongs to Aarti (Priya Gill), a middle-class girl who lives in Nainital. He mails her the purse along with a letter, and she replies with gratitude. This sparks a correspondence between them, as they share their dreams, hopes and feelings through letters. They develop a strong bond and affection for each other, even though they have never seen each other's faces.

Meanwhile, Deepak's boss Neha (Sushmita Sen), a successful businesswoman, is attracted to him and tries to woo him. However, Deepak is not interested in her and only thinks of Aarti. He decides to quit his job and start driving an auto rickshaw with the help of his friend Pritam (Jackie Shroff). On the other hand, Aarti's sister and brother-in-law try to arrange her marriage with Prem (Salman Khan), a wealthy and handsome businessman who is also their neighbor and partner. However, Aarti is not keen on marrying anyone else but Deepak.

One day, Aarti decides to surprise Deepak by visiting him in Delhi without informing him. She hopes to meet him and confess her love. However, fate has other plans. She fails to find his address or workplace and ends up hiring his auto rickshaw without recognizing him. They spend the whole day together, visiting various places in Delhi, but neither of them reveals their identity. Deepak feels a connection with her but does not know that she is Aarti. Aarti feels disappointed that she could not meet Deepak but enjoys his company as a friend.

As they reach the railway station, where Aarti has to catch her train back to Nainital, they realize that they are wearing the same sweater that Aarti had knitted for Deepak and sent him as a gift. They finally recognize each other and embrace each other with joy. They confess their love and decide to get married. Neha and Prem also realize that they are not meant for each other and wish them happiness.
